I am sending this in just to remind the glibc maintainers
of an enhancement request I put in in Feb 98 that I think would
be very useful. I see it is still in GNATS, but in the suspended
state. I have attached the text of the request.

I would like an enhancement made to glibc to support control of
stdio buffer flushing via an environment variable. So that if,
say, the environment variable is set to "2l3l1n4f",
the library will perform line buffering on descriptors 2 and 3,
stdout will be non-buffered, and descriptor 4 will be fully
buffered. You get the idea, implement it how you like.
This is something that is long overdue in the UNIX world: it is a
bit of a pain to have to use ptys (ala "expect") to force an
application to flush its output buffers so I can monitor what it
is doing. Better control of stdio buffering would be highly
useful.
