Subject: Beta version of ipfirewall v2.0d available
Sender: firewalls-owner@GreatCircle.COM
Precedence: bulk
Very short background info:
ipfirewall is an IP packet filtering tool which is analogous to the
packet filtering facilities provided by most commercial routers.
Once the facility has been installed on a host computer, the system
administrator defines a set of blocking filters and a set of forwarding
filters. The blocking filters determine which packets are to be accepted
by the host. The forwarding filters determine which packets are to
be forwarded by the host.
ipfirewall v2.* is distributed on a shareware basis. Registered users
(i.e. those who pay the minimum suggested shareware contribution) receive
a bound copy of the "ipfirewall v2.0 User's Guide". In addition, I try to
provide registered users with fast turn-around on bug reports.
I'm almost ready to ship ipfirewall v2.0d. The major change in this version
is support for the Linux operating system. Although the changes required to
support Linux are mostly cosmetic, they affect a fair number of lines of
source code. Consequently, I'd really like to get a few people to take this
new version of ipfirewall out for a test drive before I ship it.
In order to (hopefully) entice a few beta-testers and encourage them to
submit prompt problem reports, I'm making the following offer:
Anyone who reports a previously unreported security related or other
serious bug will become an instant registered user. i.e. I'll waive
the shareware fee, send them a bound copy of the user's guide and
treat them exactly like any other registered user.
N.B. I get to decide if the bug is a "security related or other serious
bug". Don't worry - I intend to be quite reasonable!
If you're interested and are in a position to be able to try out this new
version promptly (i.e. within the next week or so) then please contact me
via e-mail (danny@BouletFermat.ab.ca).
Ideally, I'd get a volunteer to test this version on each of the operating
systems listed at the end of this note . . .
N.B. This beta version of ipfirewall is only being distributed directly
via e-mail to people who volunteer to be beta testers. It is NOT available
for ftp (the 'official' v2.0d release will be available for ftp shortly).
======
The current version of ipfirewall is available for ftp from:
ftp://ftp.nebulus.net/pub/bsdi/security/ipfirewall_v2.0c.gz
or
ftp://ftp.bsdi.com/contrib/networking/security/ipfirewall_v2.0c.shar.gz
ipfirewall v2.0c runs on:
BSD/386 1.1 (or BSD/OS 1.1)
BSD/OS 2.0
FreeBSD 2.0
NetBSD-current
Note: versions of Linux and FreeBSD released after sometime last fall contain
a port of a much older version of ipfirewall.
